Preserving the traditional “Kinran” technique
of Nishijin, Kyoto
Nishijin Okamoto is a collective of masters of the “Kinran” technique. This technique is one of the most magnificent brocade techniques in Nishijin, a district of Kyoto famed for its luxury silks. We have produced silks fit for shrines and temples since we were first established.
The world of Nishijin Kinran brocade,
supported by ancient craftsmanship
Kinran are flamboyant and luxurious textiles made with gold thread by a unique method using metal foil. They developed alongside the history of Nishijin brocade, and have added color to Japanese culture through a wide range of uses.
Nishijin Okamoto is one of only a few organizations that preserves the technique today.
New Nishijin Okamoto designs
reflecting modern culture
Traditionally, our textiles for shrines and temples were not advertised as Nishijin Okamoto products. Today, we are making new designs of Nishijin Kinran brocade that pay respect to tradition while showing the world the beauty of our textiles.
