Nishijin Okamoto×A Scandinavian Designer’s Haute Couture Dress

～～Nishijin Kinran challenge to FINLAND～～

Nishijin’s weaver “Nishijin Okamoto” produced haute couture dress in collaboration with the Finnish designer, Mr. Teemu Muurimäki. Swedish model, Ms.Ellen wear it in the December issue of Gloria (fashion and lifestyle magazine) .

Mr. Teemu Muurimäki has accumulated his knowledge and skills at some maison de coutures such as Dolce & Gabbana, Bottega Veneta, Giorgio Armani. Now he is a popular designer of haute couture dresses, wedding dresses and contemporary dance costumes among Finnish celebrities.

Mr. Muurimäki’s tailored dress was selected as a subject of ‘Stamps Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Independence of Finland’ and started to be sold the other day.

From now on, he intends to supply dresses to celebrities around the world.

“Golden Fabric!” said Mr. Muurimäki joyfully, when he saw our samples. That was the beginning. Since then, we had been developing this plan with the project coordinator, Ms. Minako Lakso living in Finland, who introduced Mr. Muurimäki to us.

I had a pleasure to collaborate with Japanese Nishijin Okamoto and design a dress for their stunning “sangai-bishi” golden silk fabric I chose from their amazing portfolio.  The fabric was made for me as a special order.  I was inspired by the overlapping diamond shape when dropping the fabric, trying to capture the same harmony of repetition in my design.  Happy to see the dress featured in Gloria Magazine styled by Liisa Kokko and pic by @rosengard . This year marks the 100th anniversary of the foundation in Finland. Japan is closely related to Finland. We believe mutual exchanges will be stepped up more from now on. We hope that our company can be one of its bridges.

Okamoto Orimono Co., Ltd. (Nishijin Okamoto) has been weaving silk fabrics for over 100 years. We’ve been offering Kinran (gold brocade) fabricated mainly by using handloom for shrines and temples. Our Kinran (gold brocade) are the fabric that expresses shrines and temples beautifully as if it was paradise. It’s been about two years since one of our employees from Sapporo has begun in full development of new markets hoping to show them to various people.

There are full of depressing stories such as shortage of successors across Nishijin areas, these days. “With the situation as it is, Nishijin will go down. We must create new marketing network and connect them to successors. One of the beautiful silk fabrics’ history will end. That is not only our problem. All of Nishijin companies need to consider it together.” We are hoping that it will come from the bottom of our heart.

If we can convey the beauty of silk fabric, wonderfully and exciting collaborations could be opened.

As our first development of overseas markets, we visited Finland and had great opportunities to meet some people. Especially Mr. Muurimäki who already tailored our fabric into a very gorgeous dress.

We would like to continue making efforts to spread Nishijin brocade domestically and internationally.
