Nishijin Okamoto | Challenging Tradition with the “Hikibaku” Technique

Announcement of the Exhibition: MANGA × Nishijin-ori Collaboration Work “Hyuran.”

At Nishijin Okamoto, we create Nishijin-ori using the rare traditional technique known as “Hikibaku.”
Hikibaku is an advanced weaving method in which washi paper is coated with gold leaf or lacquer, cut into fine strips, and woven into the fabric. Each thread is custom-made by skilled artisans for every project. We preserve this technique on both hand looms and power shuttle looms, continuing to challenge ourselves with new creative possibilities.

This time, we have collaborated with the young manga creator unit “Granuto” to produce
“MANGA × Nishijin-ori Kinran E-haku Junbiki Moyou Hikibaku – Hyuran.”
This work will be unveiled at the 2nd Tokyo Textile Scope 2026 Autumn/Winter (TTS).

Hikibaku threads are flat, short strips of washi with distinct front and back sides, crafted as special-order yarns each time.
Our ability to weave Hikibaku on both hand looms and power shuttle looms reflects the heritage passed down through generations, and we remain committed to preserving the beauty of Nishijin Kinran.

“Hyuran.” is not only a sample that demonstrates how artists and designers can express their vision through Nishijin-ori, but it is also available for custom orders.
We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition and experience the exquisite textures created by the hands of master artisans.
