What is Nishijin Silk Brocade?
Nishijin Silk Gold Brocade was originally a type of “karaori woven” in China during the Song Dynasty.
In the late Heian period (794-1185), belief in the Pure Land became popular, and Buddhism needed to explain “how beautiful paradise is” to the people in order to make their belief in the Pure Land easy to understand.
The beautiful fabric used for this purpose is thought to be Japanese Nishijin Silk brocade.
