Background to the development of the Nishijin textile sign plate

Nishijin has been a weaving town for 1,200 years, even before it was called Nishijin.
Nishijin has developed under a division of labour system in which each field of weaving involves the weaving of a single piece of cloth through the combined efforts of numerous craftsmen in the fields of thread, dyeing and weaving.
Nishijin is a town that weaves beautiful fabrics that have developed uniquely for delivery to the imperial family and shogunate.
Our ‘Kinran’ (gold brocade) is a silk fabric that has been woven for the solemnisation of shrines and temples as ‘paradise’.
Nishijin has fallen into an unprecedented crisis situation due to the long-running domestic recession and the policy of self-restraint following the Corona disaster.

We wondered what we could do to help.
What came to mind was our origins in the shrine and temple sector.
The construction and interior decoration of shrines and temples is a group of traditional crafts.
We would like to think about working on new and interesting things together with the Kyoto craftspeople who have supported shrines and temples together until now.
In order to revive Nishijin textiles, we believe that we need the power of Kyoto crafts that have supported Kyoto’s traditions.

That is why we have developed and manufactured this ‘Nishijin brocade sign plate’.

We create and develop sign plates using the Nishijin brocade technique that we have developed since the company’s foundation.
We aim to revitalise the craftsmen and material suppliers involved in Nishijin brocade production and Kyoto tableware, and to develop and pass on local resources.

Okamoto Orimono Co., Ltd Company description

Since its foundation in 1909, the company has been weaving and selling Nishijin Silk Brocade, which is based on the image of ‘paradise’, in Nishijin, Kyoto. “Kinran” refers to textiles with patterns woven into the twill or satin cloth using coloured silk and gold thread, etc., and is mainly used for kesa, Noh costumes, outer garments, etc. Nishijin Silk Brocade is a name that can only be used by businesses that are members of the Nishijin Textile Industry Association.

Only a few companies in Japan, including our company, are able to weave high-grade silk textiles on both hand looms and shuttle looms, especially those that use the world’s rare gold leaf (flat threads made from Japanese paper, lacquer and gold leaf).
