History and Tradition

At Nishijin Okamoto, we have carefully preserved the traditional technique of “HIKIBAKU”.

Normally, our company weaves a number of silk fabrics that make extensive use of “honkin hikibaku” or “honkin pattern hikibaku” made of Japanese paper, lacquer, and 23-karat gold leaf.

In the late fall of 2023, we will present at JFW JAPAN CREATION 2024 “Nishijin kinran brocade with pearl powder and silver foil” silk fabric using “Pearl powder and silver foil” which was custom-made by Kohei Murata, a traditional craftsman and Nishijin foil artist at Rakugei Kobo.

Hikibaku is a short, flat thread of thinly cut Japanese paper with two sides, and the process of cutting it is one of the traditional craft skills.

We can weave Hikifoil on both hand looms and power shuttle looms.

We cherish the techniques handed down from our ancestors and will continue to protect Nishijin brocade.

*One of our missions at Nishijin Okamoto is to increase the number of traditional craftsmen and to create new jobs for them. We will introduce you to our craftsmen, so please contact us if you have any questions.
